This picture book is a fictional imagining of a young Yoruba regent—a daughter who serves as temporary ruler if her royal father dies without a son—who is eventually elected permanent ruler after she takes her late father’s advice to heart: “Those who will rule must first learn to serve.” Soft illustrations in vivid colors include eye-catching details, such as the gorgeous textiles seen throughout the regent’s village. An author’s note shares a brief history of the region and the hopeful impetus for writing the text.
